| ChiStepper Chats With 15yo Alauna Christian |
![]() Alauna dancing with TaBoo Not much about Steppin warms my heart more than seeing the youth embrace the dance. So when ChiStepper came across a Youtube video of a 15 year old young lady holding her own with legendary Stepper TaBoo, we had to figure who she was and reach out to her. As it turns out, this young St. Louis native is the daughter of Stepper Cheryl Christian. She’s really bright and a true sweetheart. Steppers meet 15 year old Alauna Christian … T. Pratt: I’m sure you saw the video of you dancing with legendary Stepper Taboo. What did you think about it? Dim lights Alauna Christian: I thought I did good. To be an upcoming stepper and not have as many skills as other people have. I was intimated a little bit but I thought I did okay. T. Pratt: Who else have you danced with that you think is really good? Alauna: I’ve danced with a lot of people so I would actually say … I’ve danced with Malik (Swan) [and] he’s good. I’ve danced with Tyk Myn [and] he’s good. I’ve danced with a couple other steppers but not really big big ones. T. Pratt: Well those are some pretty big ones! Alauna: (Laughing) Yes, they are. T. Pratt: Malik is pretty big and Tyk is pretty big. Those are some pretty big names. T. Pratt: I think you did well, especially with you being so young. We’ve had Drew when he was younger and a guy named Jr. Stepper who was really good at 15 years old. It’s rare though to see young women develop the talent so early. How long have you been Steppin? Alauna: I’ve been Steppin like 3 years, but I’ve been dancing all of my life. T. Pratt: Dancing like how? Alauna: Dancing as in Ballet … different things. I’ve always been into dancing since I was little. T. Pratt: Were you dancing like in dance classes, or you were dancing at home? Alauna: I was in dance classes. I did a lot. A couple of performances – different plays and stuff like that. T. Pratt: Ahh, so do you plan on competing in the World’s Largest Steppers Contest? Alauna: I’m not sure. In the future maybe. Probably with more skills and the right dance partner I will probably consider it. T. Pratt: What do you mean more skills? You don’t need more skills to get in. Alauna: I need more years. T. Pratt: Why? Alauna: I’m not quite comfortable with the stage I’m at right now. T. Pratt: Well you could get in the Out-of-Towners Category. Alauna: I could. I’m thinking about it. T. Pratt: You need for me to find you a partner? (Laughing) Alauna: (Laughing) T. Pratt: You’re 15 years old. What grade are you in? Alauna: I’m gonna be a junior in the upcoming school year. T. Pratt: Wait a second. A junior at 15? Alauna: Yes. I started school early. (Giggling) T. Pratt: So I’m sure you plan on going to college. Alauna: Of course. T. Pratt: And what do you wanna be? Alauna: I would like to be a pediatrician. T. Pratt: Ahh, so that means you won’t have much time to step once you get in college. You’ll have to take about 8 years off. Alauna: Yeah. Probably 10! (Laughing) T. Pratt: Right! (Laughing) So are you going to keep practicing your dancing in the meantime? Alauna: I will. T. Pratt: When are you coming to Chicago? Alauna: I think we’re coming down for the World’s Largest. We come down a lot though because my aunt lives in Chicago of course. T. Pratt: For those that don’t know, your aunt is Margena Christian, who wrote the 6 page spread on Steppin in Ebony Magazine last year, right? Alauna: Yes you are. T. Pratt: Did you read the article? Alauna: I did get a chance to read it. T. Pratt: What did you think about it? Alauna: I thought she did very well. Personally, I look up to my aunt because I think she’s a very good writer. And for her to write a story on Steppin, I think she was the best person because a lot of people have their opinion on Steppin, but I think she provided a very neutral opinion. T. Pratt: Well young lady, it’s been great having you on ChiStepper.com. I think it’s incredible to see the youth gravitate toward the dance and bring new energy to it. Is there anything you would like to say in closing. Alauna: I would like to thank ChiStepper for taking the time out to acknowledge me and reach out to those who are reading this and thank them for reading.
