First of all, I hope you all had a Happy Thanksgiving! I am thankful for your continued support. Now while your turkey, greens, potato salad, and yams are digesting, take a minute to listen check out the New Steppers Track.
Are Steppers Drinking More?
Submitted by T. Pratt on Wed, 11/25/2009 - 13:55.
For the longest time Steppers clubs and social spots have shunned Steppers because of the notion that "they don't drink alcohol." The history of drug abuse and alcoholism on the set is well documented and older Steppers in particular, many in recovery from years past, have shyed away from drinking at the club. While this is certainly a positive Step, as you can imagine, it's a tough pill to swallow for a club owner who's floor is packed but register is empty.

Learning to Step in a New Era
Submitted by T. Pratt on Mon, 11/23/2009 - 14:22.
There was a day when most Steppers learned the dance either by watching or from a friend or relative. Some have argued that the advent of the Steppers class stifled Steppin's creativity. Most of the new Students looked robotic and appeared to be doing the same thing. Conversely, I've always argued that the dance was going through a transition, and with so many no dancers learning Steppin' at the same time, Steppin' had to go through this awkward period. Following that harsh period of criticism, a number of Steppers who learned on the classic original style have
Vendor's Exclusivity Rights: Is it a good practice?
Submitted by T. Pratt on Fri, 11/20/2009 - 16:10.
As the dance grows nationally, new issues and discussions are brought to the attention of ChiStepper.com. Most recently, I received communication concerning the growing trend of “Vendor Exclusivity Rights” at major events. Since the issue didn’t directly affect me, my first thought was to write it off. On second thought however, I imagined how disheartening it might be for an up and coming or even an established entrepreneur to try and compete in a market place, only to find that opportunity in that industry is blocked.
Around Town: Gary Contest Coverage and More
Submitted by T. Pratt on Thu, 11/19/2009 - 16:26.
On Monday night I stopped in on Sam Chatman at the Dating Game. Ice Ray and his lovely wife were parked by the dance floor. Ray must have been in a festive mood because he got down much more than usual on this night. Ken Bedford was in the building plugging his December 3rd set at the Alhambra Palace, and he introduced me to Desi for the first time. Desi is as cool as a fan and she can dance her butt off. We had a blast on the floor. Marguette (Jett) was also in the building chillin’ at the bar. She turned me down for a dance because
Rancho Cucamonga's Victoria Francis "Fills In The Blanks"
Submitted by T. Pratt on Wed, 11/18/2009 - 16:40.
During the World's Largest Weekend this year, I met an eager young up and comer named Victoria from California. After her buddy sequestered me on the dance floor to teach her what I knew about the Bopping, Victoria was next in line for about four straight dances. ChiSteppers, keep your eye out on this little lemon drop from California. Check out Victoria as she "Fills In The Blanks."

2009 Survey Results: 8 Count Still Dominant
Submitted by T. Pratt on Tue, 11/17/2009 - 16:19.
Those of you who are new to Steppin' won't remember the intense rivalry between the 6 and 8 counters in the early 2000's. There were theories that one count was faster than the other and/or that the 8 allowed for less creativity. In reality, and Dave Maxx said it best, there is absolutely "no difference" between the actual movements. To that end, Brian "Steppin' B" Patterson was one of the first instructors that I'm familiar with, who would actually switch counts in mid-step to prove this point, as both the 3 and the 4 are the same on both counts.<
Exclusive Interview w/ former WLSC beginner's winner, Tanisha Austin
Submitted by T. Pratt on Mon, 11/16/2009 - 16:13.
Of all of the suggestions I get expressing the readers' wishlist for ChiStepper.com, interviews with more out-of-town and up and coming Steppers ranks the highest. So I thought Huntsville, Alabama's Tanisha Austin would be great to interview, as she is a winner of last year's World's Largest Steppers Contest beginner's category. Tanisha talks candidly with ChiStepper about the difficulties of Steppin in the south, as well as the controversy surrounding the fruits of her contest winnings.

New Steppers Track: Method Man & Redman "Mrs. International"
Submitted by T. Pratt on Mon, 11/16/2009 - 01:04.
Hip Hop has been integrated less and less into Steppin' these days. Aside from Lupe Fiasco's "Steady Mobbin", Jay Z's "American Dreamin'," and Lil Wayne's "Mrs. Officer," few Hip Hop songs are entering Steppin' DJ's rotation. This Meth and Redman track deserves some consideration however, as the smooth rap vocals lay atop of sexy instrumentation and a melodic baseline.

World's Largest Out-of-Towner Winner Tricia Evans needs our help!
Submitted by T. Pratt on Thu, 11/12/2009 - 16:58.
Before I share Tricia's story with you, I first want to share with you an email that I received yesterday. I read forwarded emails about .01% of the time, but something compelled me to open this one up. It was called "I Believe." One sentence on the list said "I believe that you should leaved loved ones with Loving words. It might be the last time you see them." Fortunately, in Tricia's situation everybody was safe. I quote that sentence though, because in an instance, one small thing can happen and turn your life upside down
Cleveland's Kendra Willis "Fills In The Blanks"
Submitted by T. Pratt on Wed, 11/11/2009 - 13:56.
If you head down to Cleveland for a Gentlemen of Ballroom or Dancing Don's and Divas set, you're sure to bump into a vibrant, slim, chocolate young lady buzzing around the room, dancing and chatting it up. This year Cleveland's Kendra Willis entered the World's Largest Steppers Contest and added her name to the national list of up and coming steppers. ChiSteppers, check out Kendra as she "Fills in the Blanks."

Dre, Darrell Davis, and Friends Snapping at Mr. G's (2001)
Submitted by T. Pratt on Tue, 11/10/2009 - 00:21.
ChiStepper just dropped another piece of exclusive Steppers footage straight from the archives featuring Dre, Darrell Davis, Tanya, and two other young ladies as they shut the club down snapping off. This was only a few days before Dre's birthday, so it's possible that it was at Rose Wellington's annual Christmas party, where Dre celebrates every year.
Exclusive Interview: Corey "C Smooth" Harper
Submitted by T. Pratt on Mon, 11/09/2009 - 16:26.
I remember being at DeJa Vu's set and hearing Corey say that he was a DJ. I laughed and started teasing him. Shortlythereafter, he was DJing the World's Largest Prelims at the 50 Yard Line and spinning records for a packed crowd on Wednesday nights under his banner "C Smooth Entertainment." On those evenings, I had to give Corey his due.

New Steppers Track: Mariah Carey "Candy Bling"
Submitted by T. Pratt on Sun, 11/08/2009 - 13:04.
This week's new Steppers Track comes from Mariah Carey and it's called "Candy Bling." The song has that Dream "I Luv Your Girl" sound to it, and I remember Dream's song getting a little burn on the Steppers scene. I have to admit, I repearted the track about 5 times in a row myself. Interestingly, I can't think of another Mariah Carey Steppers song, so this just might earn Mariah her first stripe. Would you Step to this joint or is it too popcorn R&Bish for you?
Detroit's Jeff Clark "Fills In The Blanks"
Submitted by T. Pratt on Fri, 11/06/2009 - 13:28.
This is the last week for Steppers to take the 2009 Demographic Survey (take it here if you haven’t already: http://www.surveymonkey.com/s.aspx?sm=VlCLOGosLDRRdOUWazpwqQ_3d_3d), and while viewing the suggestions section for ChiStepper.com, there was an overwhelming response from the community to hear about up and coming Steppers. Some said that they were tired of only hearing about Tyk, Dre,
