No D'Elegance Contest For Tee Tee
Submitted by T. Pratt on Wed, 05/13/2009 - 16:19.
Tee Tee initially reported to ChiStepper.com that she would host this year's Club D'Elegance Contest. She has since reached out to let us know that she will no longer be involved with the contest. It seems as if Club D'Elegance dragged their feet a little too long for her to feel comfortable with the promotion. ChiStepper will keep you all updated should any new developments come our way.

Contest Talk: Master's Category 2009 Revisited
Submitted by T. Pratt on Thu, 04/02/2009 - 13:15.
While I was out at Rose Wellington’s set on Saturday, March 28th, I bumped into Tyk Myn. Tyk said, “T, have you heard how they’re doing the Master’s Category this year?” I said, “Nah Tyk, what’s up?” He explained, “The Master’s will compete in all three categories for a winner-take-all prize.” By all three categories, Tyk was talking about Original, Trio, and Walking. Before strolling on by, Tyk finished his comment with one final barb. He said, “I don’t think any of the Ma

Contest Talk: Tee Tee Pegged to Host 2009 Club D'Elegance Contest
Submitted by T. Pratt on Tue, 03/31/2009 - 12:21.
Steppers in the ChiStepper forum have been asking for some fresh contest information, and ChiStepper has learned that Tanya "Tee Tee" Nash of Teach Me To Step will be the woman for the job. The D'Elegance Contest, made popular Darrell Davis and Marguett Coleman nearly a decade ago, has always been a staple in the Chicago Steppers community. In recent years however, the contest has had some difficulty attracting dancers. Tee Tee expressed that she thought Sunshine of Shine Entertainment did a really good job last year, and that she hoped to build on her success by

Competition Talk: Chicago vs. OOT Beginners
Submitted by T. Pratt on Fri, 02/06/2009 - 15:26.
With the exception of the two standout freshman photo’d here (Drew Alexander and LaKeesha Anderson of Detroit), most beginners from cities outside of Chicago struggle for longer periods to learn the dance. Drew and LaKeesha actually skipped the beginners competition altogether, a feat that is quite common for some women, but far less common for the guys. Even so, beginners from Detroit, Milwaukee, and parts of Indiana that border Chicago have generally fared well. Atlanta, Oakland, and L. A.

2008 ChiStepper People's Choice Awards Nominations
Submitted by T. Pratt on Mon, 12/08/2008 - 14:35.
Last year the Steppin' community complained that they wanted to be more involved in selecting the finalists for the ChiStepper People’s Choice Awards. So this time, most of the nominations for each category will come from the public. A Stepper can only be placed in 2 categories. Those categories will be determined by the areas where they earn the most nominations. Please nominate your top 5 (or less) selections for each category and list them under each section. If you list more than 5, only your top 5 selections will be counted.

The Contest Dance Floor - Steppin in the early 90's
Submitted by T. Pratt on Wed, 10/29/2008 - 14:42.
During this year's contest a number of Steppers complained that the dance floor should have been elevated. Some argued that the judges couldn't see the contestant's footwork when they were close to the tables. To rectify this problem, they suggested that the raised dance floor be used in future contests. As a past contestant, I liked the raised floor better, although it did present quite a few challenges. One of the main challenges was the fear of falling off of it. Another was having a portable floor with the metal grooves that pose a problem for women with heels.

World's Largest Contest Comparison: '92 vs '07
Submitted by T. Pratt on Mon, 10/27/2008 - 12:52.
In Graelin Woodley’s April 2008 ChiStepper interview, he demystified much of the history of the World’s Largest Steppers Contest. Graelin helped us understand why the prize money went from $22,000 in ‘94 to $15,000 in 2007, and why the crowd size went from 4,000 – 5,000 to 500 – 1,500. Steppers were also in the dark about how the contest transitioned from a downtown Chicago hotel, to the Willowbrook Ballroom in the suburbs of Chicago. As Graelin would suggest, it’s all about corporate sponsorship.

The Majestic Gents, ChiStepper.com, and Dre and Company will host the World's Largest Steppers Contest Viewing and Appreciation party. DJ Raphael will spin the records as we come together to view the "raw" footage of the contest. No, we have no intentions of watching K'Jon's 45 minute quiet storm mini-concert. This time we'll get straight to business, watch the contest, and dance.
